According to USA Today Sports, James isn’t going to take his talents to the head of the NBA players union. But the possibility of becoming the league’s most powerful player to step-in and hold such a prime position was definitely one worth mulling over.
“I just think the union is going backwards, and it’s not in a good place right now,” James said Saturday in an interview with ESPN. “I think my voice could be huge in that situation.”
In an age where most players would be worrying about their impending free agency, James’ focus was on the state of the NBA and giving away bicycles and tablets to underprivileged children in his hometown of Ohio.
That’s not to say that money and free agency never crossed his mind.
I mean, we’ve all witnessed the 2010 recruiting spectacle. We’ve also heard him tell the world about never getting credit for the financial sacrifice that he has taken by never signing a max contract.
But for now, that’s where the sacrifice ends.
“The only thing for me is I don’t know if I have the time to do it,” James said of running the players union.
Thanks in part to the Eastern Conference overhaul, he decided that he didn’t have that time. Especially with Derrick Rose coming back for the Chicago Bulls, the additions of Danny Granger and Luis Scola to the Indiana Pacers and Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry’s mass exodus to the Brooklyn Nets.
“I’ve been back in the gym for a few weeks now, going at it,” James said via the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “I’ve seen what so many teams have done to get better. I’ve seen the moves that we’ve made, so I’ve got to do my part.”
And that’s good news for any Miami Heat fan whose 2013 motto begins: The less distraction the better.
